Environmental & Economic Comparison of Operating Room Textiles (4.99 MB)
Assosistema Confidustria has published a major, well-structured and scientifically robust study, carried out by Ebli in collaboration with Ambiente Italia, member companies, and several public healthcare authorities. This analysis provides the most comprehensive comparison to date between disposable (TNT) and reusable (TTR) textiles used in hospital operating rooms.
Using rigorous Life Cycle Assessment (ISO 14040/14044, PEF method) and Life Cycle Costing, the study delivers clear, evidence-based results that are highly relevant for the entire sector:
Environmental performance: Reusable gowns and drapes show 45-55% lower overall environmental impact, with 30-35% lower CO₂ emissions per item compared to disposables.
Economic performance: Total life cycle costs for reusables are 21-50% lower, driven by reduced raw material needs and more efficient end-of-life management.
This study represents a valuable technical resource for industrial laundries, textile suppliers and healthcare procurement teams, confirming that reusable textiles offer significant environmental and economic advantages over single-use products.
Although the study is available in Italian, using common digital tools should make the content easily accessible to all readers who need it.
👉 We strongly encourage you to read the full study to understand its findings and implications for our sector.
