US  fire protection standard for firefighters' garments

'NFPA 1851' is the US standard on Selection, Care and Maintenance of structural Fire Fighting Protective Ensembles, dating from 2008. It details inspection, cleaning, repairs, verification, storage and retirement. It requires ensembles to be retired no more than 10 years from date of manufacture. This standard will be used, together with an Australian report on whole life cycle costing of firefighters' garments as a starting point for discussions within a new CEN Task Force on Total Cost of Ownership.
