ETSA answers consultation on the EU's strategy for sustainable textiles.

On 4 August, ETSA secretariat submitted its response to the European Commission's strategy for sustainable textiles. In line with existing EU ambitions, such as the EU Climate Law (which has the set goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 57% by the year 2030 and having the EU becoming totally carbon neutral by 2050),  the Commission opened this consultation with respect to its goals of making the broader textile industry sustainable both in Europe, and in global supply chains.

Moreover, the Commission's concrete ambitions for the coming EU Textile Strategy, include not only the aforementioned sustainability goals, but also in ensuring that textiles and textile services recover from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic given the essential role they play in the European economy.

Throughout June and July, ETSA secretariat was in contact with our members, from textile care & rentals to supplier firms and national associations,  in order to discern the areas of greatest priority and concern when it comes to making our industry more green. We felt it vital to show the Commission not only how committed textile services are to doing our part with respect to improving sustainability, but also illustrate how ours is an industry which is constantly striving to innovate and discover, new out of the box solutions that can make our businesses simultaneously more lucrative and environmentally conscious.

We'd like to thank all the organizations and their staff who took the time to share their thoughts on the consultation with us at the ETSA secretariat.  If you'd like to share your thoughts on the follow up to the consultation or indeed any piece of salient EU legislation, please get in touch with the ETSA secretariat. The EU strategy for sustainable textiles is scheduled for legislative adoption in autumn of 2021.
