Fourteen specialists in hygiene and washroom services from seven ETSA member companies met with the Hjelt Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology (University of Helsinki) at ETSA's recent washroom services meeting. The results of the comparative study of four hand drying systems (cotton, paper, warm air, jet air) were presented.

The main conclusions of the research are that:

  • the proper drying of hands is very important to hand hygiene;
  • mechanical rubbing of hands with paper or cotton is essential to remove bacteria;
  • cotton and paper are the best option in public places.

ETSA is prepararing communications material on the full study results.
